Overview

With the same spirit of joy, irreverence, and fun, the authors of Professional Writing in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology have produced a companion Workbook. It provides instruction in, and opportunities to improve the accuracy and clarity of writing that students and professionals need for success in clinical practicum, evidence-based practice, and career advancement. The nine chapters and accompanying CD use the knowledge and skills assessment (KASA) format to address common errors in usage and scholarship, as well as compliance with ethical issues, use of Internet and library resources, and strategies for oral presentation. The Workbook may be used as a stand-alone text for clinical practicum or for a professional writing course. The authors have combined it with the 2009 text for an introductory course in research methods.

Review

  • David Curtin, newly-qualified SLT, 4-Star rating! Royal College of Speech & Language Therapy, (December 2011):
""This book targets SLT and audiology students aiming to perfect their professional writing skills, while proving a useful resource for newly-qualified and existing practitioners. Early chapters focus on evidence-based and ethical considerations when writing. They cover contemporary topics, such as using internet and library resources effectively, with a guide to accurate referencing and common abbreviations used in both professions. Later capters concentrate on writing oral presentations, clinical reports and referrals, with a final section on writing for career advancement. It is a practical workbook, offering readers the opportunity to learn and practice their skills by completing accompanying 'assignments', each with an answer key. There is an additional CD-ROM, providing models of writing forms across both disciplines. Overall, it is well-structured and coherent, focusing on topics relevant to an academic and clinical setting, while using an informal and witty register, to maintain the reader's interest.""
