ABOUT THE BOOK
Speech-language pathologists in medical settings frequently working with older adults who have cognitive-linguistic and/or swallowing disorders as a result of strokes, traumatic head injuries, degenerative diseases, general decline, and frailty have no source that documents the abilities in the neurologically intact aging population. Thus, professionals and family members have no idea of what to expect from healthy older adults in terms of communicative and swallowing abilities. Angela Burda’s book is that resource.

Her book comprises eight chapters, the first seven of which summarize the pertinent evidence of a specific topic relating to neurologically intact adults aged 60 and older. Typical age-related changes will be addressed in a narrative format. Other topics in the narrative section will include factors that can affect the specified ability, signs that older adults are having difficulty in the specified topic area and warrant referral to a speech-language pathologist or other medical professional, and strategies that can facilitate favorable performance in the topic area. At the end of the narrative information, a new section entitled “Quick Facts” will be comprised of bullet points that provide a summary list of major points presented in the narrative. This will allow readers to easily find the pertinent information when they may find themselves pressed for time. The final chapter provides a summary of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, and its applications to aging adults and features a “Quick Facts” bullet point section highlighting pertinent information therein.

This, then, is the only work to focus on the expected communicative and swallowing changes that can occur as a result of the aging process. Specifically, it summarizes and presents the available research on healthy aging adults’ performance and abilities in auditory comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking, writing, voice and motor speech abilities, cognition, and swallowing and will prove an invaluable resource for clinicians in the medical setting
