ABOUT THE BOOK
This new textbook is intended to instruct a broad audience on the technical nuances of endoscopic transsphenoIdal surgery for the treatment of pituitary tumors. Endoscopy is a tool that increases visualization in and around the sella and the endoscopic approach is a minimal access route that preserves normal mucosal planes and anatomy. However, endoscopy is merely a technique. The comprehensive surgical treatment of patients with pituitary tumors also requires an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology of the pituitary-hypothalamic axis, the biology of pituitary tumors, intrasellar surgical techniques, indications for surgery, possible complications and medical alternatives. For this reason, a great deal of this textbook is written by neuroendocrine surgeons who may not use the endoscope, but who have treated pituitary tumors for many years and acquired expertise in their management. Other chapters are written by surgeons who may use both approaches or may have switched from one approach to the other. In unifying these various perspectives into one comprehensive guide, the book admirably serves the needs of otolaryngologists and neurosurgeons, as well as endocrinologists, opthalmologists and neurologists who also engage with this patient group.
