Cases in Head and Neck Cancer: A Multidisciplinary Approach encompasses rich material and resources that demonstrate the complex interface between the diagnostic and clinical information necessary to successfully manage patients with head and neck cancer. This must-read book contains cases written by leading experts in the field that cover a wide variety of head and neck cancers (i.e., tongue base, tonsil, laryngeal, HPV related, etc.) and treatment options, including minimally invasive surgery such as robotic surgery and combined modality treatment protocols. Specifically, this text addresses comprehensive cases from initial evaluation, diagnosis, imaging, and other physiological tests to multidisciplinary treatment management (surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy). Additionally, approaches for the management of toxicities or morbidities of cancer treatment are presented, as well as care plans, discharge plans, and caregiver burden and survivorship issues. Moreover, material on health literacy, humanistic care, and improving communication with assistive technology has been included.

Written by clinicians specializing in speech-language pathology, otolaryngology, medical and radiation oncology, pathology, nurse case management, radiology, dietics, among other fields, this collection of authors provides one of the most complete presentations of the inner workings of the multidisciplinary care team.

The adult cases of head and neck cancer reviewed in this text exemplify current practice issues surrounding HPV, minimally invasive robotic surgery and combined modality treatments. Each author threads introductory comments throughout the cases illustrating the critical role of the speech-language pathologist, in particular, and how all clinicians must address coping with survivorship and caregiver burden issues.

Cases in Head and Neck Cancer intends to teach future medical practitioners how to approach the complexities associated with head and neck cancer. Its vast number of images and videos included on a PluralPlus companion website allow for experiential driven classroom activities. This text will be an invaluable resource for the education of speech-language pathologists, medical students, nurse care managers, dieticians, and any person involved in a head and neck cancer team.

The book includes access to 46 videos and 5 audio clips hosted on a PluralPlus companion website.

Bari Hoffman

Bari Hoffman, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an Associate Dean in the College of Health Professions and Sciences, Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, with a joint appointment in Internal Medicine within the College of Medicine at the University of Central Florida. Dr. Hoffman serves as Director of the Center for Voice Care and Swallowing Disorders at the Ear Nose Throat and Plastic Surgery Associates. She has worked clinically in this setting for more than 20 years treating individuals with voice and upper airway disorders specializing in pediatric, professional, and neurogenic populations, along with individuals undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer. Dr. Hoffman received her doctoral degree from the University of Florida in 2001. Her current research involves studying novel treatment technologies and biomechanical mechanisms for disorders of laryngeal function, while defining the high impact on quality of life factors. She implements 3-D computer modeling of upper and lower airway function, coping strategies of individuals with dysphonia, and respiratory muscle strength paradigms in a variety of patient groups. Dr. Hoffman has a significant record of peer-reviewed publications, authorship of two other textbooks: Cases in head and Neck Cancer: A Multidisciplinary Approach and Respiratory Muscle Training. She actively lectures across the country and internationally on these topics. In recognition of her contributions to teaching, research, and service, she has received numerous awards within her university, state, and national associations.

Henry Ho

Henry Ho, MD, FACS, is director, Head and Neck Program, The Florida Hospital Cancer Institute; president, The Ear, Nose, Throat and Plastic Associates, P.A.; associate professor of surgery, Florida State University College of Medicine; and associate professor of otolaryngology, University of Central Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Ho completed his bachelor's degree, doctor of medicine, and residency in otolaryngology and head and neck fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He began his medical practice in Winter Park and Orlando, Florida, in 1985, where he has remained ever since. His practice has grown since then from a four physician, single-specialty practice, to a twelve physician and five physician assistant practice with more than 100 employees. It has grown with Central Florida to become the tertiary referral resource in otolaryngology, covering the largest hospital system in Florida with more than 1,200 inpatient beds. With growth, his practice has embraced subspecialization and now Dr. Ho’s practice is 80% focused on head and neck cancer. Always seeking to improve patient care, Dr. Ho, with Dr. Lehman, performed the first transoral robotic surgery for oropharngeal cancer in Central Florida in 2010. He continues to enjoy head and neck surgery and the teaching of medical students and residents.
